The word affirmation comes from the Latin affirmare, originally meaning “to make steady, strengthen.” By default, every affirmation should be on the empowering affirmations list. They all give us the opportunity to choose words that help create or eliminate something in our lives. For example, creating success or confidence or healthy relationships, and eliminating low self-esteem, destructive behaviours and even pain.

Affirmations help us retrain our thinking and speaking into positive patterns so we can truly transform our lives. We can get more of what we want and less of what we don’t. But be careful because everything we say is an affirmation. Every thought, every sentence is just confirming what we want in life.

Affirmations do not work by magic. For the most part, they work due to the power of positive thinking. Studies show it is easier to make positive change when you use daily affirmations.

The first way affirmations work is by creating less anxiety and stress about the change you are undertaking. Secondly, they change the way people think about “falling off the wagon” with their change. There is nothing wrong with having an “off day” with a habit change. Unfortunately, many people use this as an excuse to say, “I can’t do it” and quit. Daily affirmations give you the motivation to keep going through these tough times.

As we grow older, it becomes tougher and tougher to change our thoughts. We become used to our thought patterns. But with conscious effort, you can “rewire” your brain. One of the best ways to do this is by using empowering affirmations. 

How to use Affirmations

These are lots of ways to use affirmations and people use them differently. Some people speak them into a mirror on a morning, others run them through their minds when negative thoughts begin to plague them.

Daily positive affirmations and practice won’t magically change your life overnight- but it will help you re-program your mind. If you ever thought of yourself as not good enough, not smart enough, if you often tell yourself: “I can’t,” give some of these a try, for at least a week.

Let go of those limiting thoughts and beliefs; use affirmations as a tool for manifesting a change. Write them down, speak them aloud, use post-it notes to stick them in a place where you will see them often. It’s probably a good idea to use your affirmations with your current habits and goals.

Affirmations are not a quick fix for mental health problems. Like any thought changing behaviour, they take time, patience and a lot of practice. Our negative self-talk builds up over time and it can take some time to alter these thought patterns. I promise that you are more special than you believe.
